Grilled chicken Djudje Kebab with rice and vegetables at Termeh Vienna, a great high-protein post-workout meal

The Best Post-Workout Restaurants in Vienna: Districts 17–23

After my gym session in Vienna, the last thing I want is to stand outside a restaurant reading a menu trying to figure out if anything on it will actually help me recover. Vienna has great food, but finding spots that work post-workout, real protein, actual carbs, not just a plate of bread and dressing, takes some local knowledge.

This is part three of my post-workout restaurants in Vienna series. Districts 17 to 23 are spread out, more residential, and honestly underrated for eating well. Here’s one solid spot per district that I’ve actually eaten at after training.

If you haven’t checked out the earlier guides yet, you can find great options for the inner districts here: The Best Post-Workout Food in Vienna: Districts 1–8 and The Best Post-Workout Meals in Vienna: Districts 9–16.

When it comes to choosing these spots, I look for solid protein, real carbs instead of empty ones, and food that actually feels good after training. Finished a session at one of Vienna’s gyms with free trials or cheap day passes, gone for a run, or done an outdoor workout like this one, these seven spots make it easy to refuel without overthinking it.

Plus, there’s again an interactive diagram at the end to help you plan your route across these seven districts.

17th District, Cucina Ballerini: Seafood as Recovery Food

Seafood isn’t the first thing that comes to mind for post-workout food in Vienna, but Cucina Ballerini makes a strong case for it. While most Italian spots lean hard into pasta and pizza, this one built its menu around fish and shellfish, tuna, prawns, octopus, all solid lean protein you can build a real recovery meal around. It’s also easy to keep light, mix a few smaller plates instead of committing to one heavy main.

Nearby Gyms: Schwarzenbergpark and the Heuberg area for runs or bodyweight work, FitInn Vienna Ottakringer Straße.

What I usually go for: Prawns with a salad. Simple, high in protein, and doesn’t leave you too full to move.

Other great options: Tuna steak, grilled octopus, or antipasti plates if you want to mix and match.

18th District, Bollyfood: A Proper Filling Meal After Training

If I’ve trained hard and I’m actually hungry, not peckish, hungry, Bollyfood in the 18th district is where I go. Indian food doesn’t get filed under fitness food very often, but it should. You get a solid mix of protein from chicken or lentils, carbs from rice, and enough fat to make it satisfying without weighing you down.

Why it’s great post-workout: I usually go for the lunch deal, which comes with rice, a small salad, and a soup, and is genuinely great value. You pick between vegetarian and meat options, and you leave properly full.

What I usually go for: Chicken Korma. I just can’t resist it. When I want something a bit lighter, I switch to the traditional chicken curry, still satisfying but not as rich.

Part of the lunch deal: this day, it was a simple but creamy tomato soup, great to start your post-workout meal.

A super satisfying post-workout combo: chicken korma, rice, and a small salad. Perfect when you’re really hungry after training.

Other great options: Daal Makhni for a solid plant-based pick, or a curry with smaller sides if you want more control over your portions.

Nearby Gyms: Türkenschanzpark, big enough for a proper run with open grass for bodyweight work too.

19th District, Termeh: Persian Food for Recovery

Persian food is underrated for recovery, and Termeh is the reason I found that out. Grilled protein, carbs, and fresh sides in one plate, exactly what you want after training.

What I usually go for: Djudje Kebab, grilled chicken skewers with rice. High in protein, easy to digest, exactly what I want after a workout.

Other great options: Kabab Barg, lamb, richer and more filling for harder sessions, Ghormeh Sabzi for a hearty herb stew, Lubia Polo if you need more carbs, or the Kobideh Sandwich when you need something quick and on the go.

Nearby Gyms: Türkenschanzpark and Setagaya Park both work for runs or lighter movement, or Speedfit Heiligenstadt for a proper gym session.

20th District, Vevi: Light and Plant-Based

Some days you don’t want a heavy meal, you want something clean and easy to digest. That’s Vevi, a Vietnamese spot in the 20th that’s become my go-to after lighter sessions.

What I usually go for: V52 Cải Thìa, rice with tofu and pak choi. Simple, balanced, and exactly what I want when I’m not in the mood for something heavy but still want a proper meal.

Other great options: V44a Miến Xào, glass noodles with tofu, vegan seafood, and vegetables, V55 Rau Xào Vô Lượng with tofu for more variety, or V156 Giá Xào Khô with tofu if you want something lighter and more vegetable-focused.

Vevi is the best post-workout restaurant in Vienna if you are vegan. V44a: glass noodles with tofu and a full load of vegetables, pak choi, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms, gives you a solid mix of carbs and plant-based protein without sitting heavy.
V44a Miến Xào: light, plant-based, and exactly what you want after a workout.

Nearby Gyms: Augarten and the Donaukanal both work well for runs or walks, or McFIT Vienna Jägerstraße if you want a gym.

21st District, Wok Bar SCN: Quick and Balanced

The 21st district doesn’t get much credit for post-workout food in Vienna, but Wok Bar SCN is exactly what you want when you’re short on time: quick, warm, and balanced.

What I usually go for: H7b, or the M1 lunch offer with chicken. Protein, carbs, and vegetables in one bowl without overcomplicating things.

Other great options: H11 Salmon for a different protein source, or H6b Black Pepper Garnelen if you’re in the mood for seafood.

When I’m genuinely short on time between training and a proper meal, dm’s snacks actually hold up surprisingly well.

Nearby Gyms: FitInn SCN is right there, or check the gyms around Floridsdorf if you’re coming from a strength session.

22nd District, Le Burger Donauzentrum: Build It Exactly How You Need It

The 22nd has some of the most flexible post-workout restaurants in Vienna, and Le Burger is the best example. You build the meal yourself, clean or indulgent, your call.

What I usually go for: A DIY burger with a protein bun, chicken, all the veggies, and pesto instead of mayo. For the cleanest version, I skip the fries and add grilled broccoli on the side, it works better than it sounds.

Best clean option: Grilled chicken burger, added egg and veggies, protein bun, a side of grilled broccoli, no extra sauces.

Other great options: Sweet potato fries if you go easy on the sauces, the Planted patty with a fried egg for a vegetarian option, or the Smart Patty if you want beef with a smaller footprint.

If you still want the sauces Le Burger is known for, dipping broccoli instead of fries is a surprisingly good compromise.

Nearby Gyms: FitInn Donauzentrum, FitInn Kagraner Platz, McFIT Kagraner Platz, or Donauinsel if you’d rather run or train outside.

23rd District, Kenny’s Riverside: Full Control Over Your Bowl

If you want complete control over your post-workout meal, Kenny’s Riverside in the 23rd is one of the best options in Vienna. Build exactly the bowl you need: lean protein, carbs, healthy fats, and enough vegetables to feel like you actually ate something.

What I usually go for: Quinoa and spinach as a base, sous-vide chicken, then a mix of edamame, cucumber, and carrot. I keep the dressing light, usually soy or sesame based.

Not sure what to order at Kenny’s? This is my go-to formula for a balanced post-workout bowl.
It’s simple, filling, and easy to adjust depending on your workout.

Nearby Gyms: The riverside area itself for walks or light movement, Liesingbachweg for a proper run, or Speedfit Vienna 23, Riverside, if you want a gym.

That’s the last stretch of the series, seven more solid spots for post-workout food in Vienna’s outer districts. Good recovery food doesn’t need to be complicated, and these districts prove you don’t have to stay near the center to eat well after training.

Not every day allows for a proper sit-down meal. When that happens, I usually just grab a protein bar and move on. Here’s what’s actually worth buying at dm.
