The Ultimate Guide to O₂ SURFTOWN MUC – Surfing Near Munich

Surfing near Munich? Yep, it’s a thing — thanks to O₂ SURFTOWN MUC. As a surf enthusiast based in Vienna, I’m constantly on the lookout for surf options that don’t require hours on a plane or a fortune to get my wave fix. I first heard about the pool when it was still under construction, and it already sounded amazing back then. When I finally got to test it out in April 2025, my suspicions were confirmed: the pool is absolutely incredible. So incredible, in fact, that pro surfer Michi Mohr (co-founder) actually moved from the coast back to Munich to build the pool and train there. The consistent waves and expert coaches make it easy to see yourself improve and gain confidence. More on that later.

Whether you’re an advanced surfer or a beginner, a weekend adventurer living in Europe, or a fitness-focused traveler visiting the continent, this blog post covers everything you need to know when planning a trip to O₂ SURFTOWN MUC. From how to get there and where to stay, to which session to book and all the other awesome experiences around the pool — I’ve got you covered.

What Is O₂ SURFTOWN MUC?

If you’re wondering what exactly O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is, think of it as Munich’s very own slice of surf paradise. A paradise right next to the airport in a town called Hallbergmoos. Opened in 2024, this isn’t just any wave pool. It’s Europe’s first endless surf lagoon powered by cutting-edge Endless Surf technology, creating perfectly shaped waves that keep rolling in without stopping.

Instead of the usual “catch a wave, then wait” rhythm you often get at typical wave pools, here the waves flow continuously, meaning you get a smooth, never-ending ride that’s almost hypnotic. Whether you’re practicing your pop-up or carving turns, the consistent waves make it easier to progress than chasing the unpredictable ocean swell.

What makes SURFTOWN MUC truly unique in Europe is this combination of high-tech, endless surf and its super accessible location — just a short ride from Munich’s city center and the airport. For landlocked Europe, having a world-class surf spot like this is pretty revolutionary.

How to Get To SURFTOWN MUC

O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is located in Hallbergmoos, a small town just outside Munich near the airport. The exact address is:

SURFTOWN MUC
Am Luftbogen 3, 85399
Hallbergmoos, Germany

Here’s the Google Maps link to help you plan your route.

Getting There by Public Transport, Car, or Bike

If you’re like me and prefer public transport, here’s the lowdown: I usually take the train to Munich East train station (München Ost), then hop on the S-Bahn, and finally catch a bus that drops you just a few minutes from the surf pool. Pro tip: download the MVV app before you go. It lets you swipe for tickets quickly and usually saves you money compared to buying tickets the “old-fashioned” way at the machine or kiosk. Trust me — every euro counts when you’re chasing waves on a budget!

Driving? There’s plenty of parking at SURFTOWN itself, so you can roll up by car without hassle. And if you’re biking, the route from Munich is pretty straightforward with bike lanes part of the way — bonus points for staying active on the way to your session.

Distance from Munich and the Airport

The pool is about 30 kilometers from Munich’s city center and just a quick 5–10 minutes from Munich Airport. You can take public transportation from the airport but depending on how lucky you are with the connection it takes between 26 and 50 minutes. Getting an uber would definitely be worth it. So whether you’re coming into town for a quick surf stopover or a longer trip, it’s super easy to fit in a session without losing hours on transport.

Surf Levels

One of the things I love most about O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is that they really make space for all levels of surfers — from total beginners to experienced riders chasing something more challenging. The sessions are split into clear categories so you know exactly what you’re getting into.

Surf levels at O2 surftown MUC

First Timer

Never surfed before? Like, not even once? The First Timer session is where you’ll want to start. It’s specifically designed for total beginners who’ve never been on a board. You get step-by-step instruction on land first, then hit the small, slow-moving whitewater waves with the support of friendly coaches. It’s ideal for building confidence, learning basic balance, and just having fun in the water without any pressure.

Rookie

Already stood on a surfboard before, even just once or twice? Then Rookie might be the better fit. These sessions are all about getting more wave time and working on your paddling and pop-up technique. The green wave is still gentle, but it actually rolls — meaning you’ll need to paddle into it, time your take-off, and start building real surfing skills. It’s a great next step after First Timer, or if you’ve had a surf lesson at the beach before.

Progressive

If you’re already catching green waves and popping up reliably, the Progressive sessions offer a bit more punch. The waves are slightly steeper and faster, giving you the chance to start trimming, turning, and improving your positioning. You can book these as coached or uncoached, but I personally recommend Progressive Coached if you want some structured guidance while leveling up. (More on that in a sec.)

Intermediate / Advanced

This is where things get sporty. The wave gets noticeably stronger and steeper, with more speed and power — perfect for practicing proper carves, cutbacks, or testing your bottom turn. You should feel confident paddling into waves, popping up quickly, and holding your line. Starting with the intermediate session you can also choose between an A-Frame or a Pointbreak Session.

Expert

For experienced surfers who want performance-focused reps. The wave here is fast, punchy, and ideal for fine-tuning maneuvers or even training for comps. Not for the hesitant — but for the seasoned, it’s a playground.

Pro

SURFTOWN MUC will soon launch also a pro session.

Kids Sessions

Younger surfers (6-10 years) can ride gentle, beginner-friendly waves under the guidance of trained coaches.

Which Session Should You Book?

Not sure what level you’re at? No worries — SURFTOWN MUC makes it super easy. When you click “Book now” on their website, you’ll be guided through a short set of questions about your surf experience, fitness level, and comfort in the water. Based on your answers, the system recommends the session that fits best — no guesswork required.

Honestly, I really appreciated this feature the first time I booked. I was still figuring out where I stood skill-wise, and the guided tool made it feel way less intimidating.

My Personal Experience: Rookie & Progressive Coached

Since I’m still early on in my surf journey, I started with a Rookie session. I booked it not primarily because of my level, but to get a feel for the pool itself. It was such a good decision. The green wave in this session is mellow but requires a decent amount of paddling, which made it great for practicing my timing and pop-up without getting overwhelmed. There’s not too much power, so you can really focus on technique. I learned, for example, that in the middle of the action, I often forgot about the power strokes and got up too early.

After just one Rookie session, I knew it was time to push myself a bit more. That’s when I moved on to the Progressive Coached sessions. These are a great step up — slightly more powerful waves, and super helpful feedback from the coaches between rides. I’m currently sticking with Progressive Coached to build consistency and confidence before leveling up again.

Prices and Booking Info at SURFOTOWN MUC

Surfing at O₂ SURFTOWN MUC isn’t cheap — but for consistent waves, clean facilities, and pro-level coaching, it’s definitely worth it. Here’s a quick overview of how the pricing works:

Pricing info for SURFTOWN MUC

Standard Prices

Most surf sessions are priced at 89€ each. This includes the beginner sessions and surf session at the Peak in A-Frame mode. A surf session in pointbreak mode (including the Pro Session I mentioned before) is set at 149€.

Session Packages and Membership

If you’re planning to surf more than once, booking a package might be the smarter way to go. You get 10% off when you buy 10 sessions. SURFTOWN MUC also offers a membership for more frequent surfers: It costs 199€ per year. The perks are access to exclusive session packages, early access to booking slots, and members-only events. If you’re local or planning to return regularly, the membership can really pay off.

Where to Book

All sessions must be booked in advance via the official website:surftown.de/en

The booking process is super smooth. As mentioned earlier, when you click on “Book now”, you’ll be guided through a quick questionnaire that helps match you to the right session based on your level and goals.

If you’re visiting during weekends, school holidays, or warmer months, I highly recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks in advance, especially for coached or beginner sessions, which tend to fill up fast.

Best Time to Go to SURFTOWN MUC

One of the best things about O₂ SURFTOWN MUC is that it’s designed to be open year-round, so you’re not limited to summer or peak holiday periods. That said, when you go can make a big difference in terms of crowd levels and overall vibe.

Generally speaking, the warmer the weather, the busier the pool. Summer weekends and school holidays can get especially packed, and even weekday sessions during that time tend to fill up fast — especially in the mornings and late afternoons.

If you’re aiming for a more relaxed session with fewer people in the lineup, your best bet is to:

  • Avoid school holidays (especially Bavarian ones)
  • Surf on a weekday, ideally
  • Book morning sessions, when the pool tends to be calmer and the energy more chill

Just know that even these “quieter” slots can get booked up in summer — so plan ahead, especially if you want a coached or beginner-level session.

Gear Rentals and What to Bring

Depending on the session type, some or all of your surf equipment may already be included.

What’s Included:

  • Kids, First Timer, and Rookie sessions include:
    • A soft top board
    • A wetsuit
    • In colder months: gloves and booties are also provided
  • Progressive sessions include:
    • A surfboard (soft top for coached, hardboard or soft top for guided)
    • Wetsuit not included — but can be rented for a small fee
  • Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert sessions do not include gear — but you can rent anything you need at the facility:

Prices for rentals are reasonable and clearly listed on-site and online.

Can You Bring Your Own Gear?

Absolutely — if you prefer to surf with your own board and wetsuit, you’re free to bring them. Just double-check surfboard length and type restrictions when booking (some sessions limit board size depending on wave type or only allow soft tops).

What to Bring:

Here’s what I recommend packing:

  • Towel
  • Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit
  • Sunscreen (reef-safe if possible)
  • Hat or cap for sunny days
  • Flip-flops or sandals for walking around the pool area
  • Your own wetsuit if you have one — it’s always nicer to surf in something that fits perfectly

Pro tip: check the current water temperature on the SURFTOWN MUC website before your session. They update it regularly, so you’ll know whether you need a thicker wetsuit, shorty, or maybe just board shorts in summer.

Where to Stay near SURFTOWN MUC

There are a few different options for accommodation near the surf pool, depending on your travel style and budget.

Camper Van Option

If you’re traveling with a camper van, you’re in luck — many surfers park right at the on-site parking lot and stay overnight. It’s super convenient, especially if you have early or multiple sessions booked.

Hotels Near the Pool

Since SURFTOWN is so close to Munich Airport, there are plenty of reasonably priced hotels nearby. I’ve personally stayed at two:

1. Prizeotel Munich-Airport

  • Clean, simple, and affordable
  • I paid 53€ per night (I booked well in advance)

2. My Minga Airport

  • My personal favorite
  • I paid 58€ per night
  • Rooms feel more like mini apartments, with a microwave, water kettle, and fridge
  • There’s a community kitchen, free tea and coffee 24/7, and even though they don’t officially serve breakfast, you’ll often find free croissants and Brezen in the morning — because, as the receptionist told me, “We don’t want anyone to start their day hungry.”

Both options are within quick walking distance from the pool and are perfect if you want a no-fuss, comfortable place to crash between sessions.

What to eat near SURFTOWN MUC

When it comes to food and nutrition, there are several options. Which one’s right for you depends mostly on your budget and your housing situation — specifically, whether you have access to a kitchen. Let’s break it down:

The Convenient Solution: LOOKOUT

Theoretically, you could spend your entire stay at SURFTOWN MUC and eat all your meals at their on-site restaurant, LOOKOUT. They serve sandwiches, pastries, and coffee — perfect for breakfast — and for lunch or dinner, you can choose from healthy rice bowls or salads, grab one of their burgers, or try something from the barbecue (meat or seafood).

The food is alright, I tried their plant-based burger with sweet potato fries and the Surfer’s Bowl. Both were good, but keep in mind: the convenience comes with a higher price tag.

  • A bowl or salad currently costs around 16.50€
  • The burger with fries adds up to over 20€
  • Barbecue dishes start at 20€

Other restaurants near SURFTOWN MUC

There are a few restaurants within walking distance of the pool. My favorites are:

  • Trattoria Pizzeria Il Girasole (right between Prizeotel and My Minga Airport)
  • Oro di Napoli am Sportpark

Both are Italian and offer pizza, pasta, and various meat or seafood dishes. Personally, I prefer Oro di Napoli for their Neapolitan-style pizza, which tends to be lighter, fresher, and healthier.

I usually go for the Napoletana (10.90€) — sometimes with sardines, sometimes without. It’s the perfect combo of protein (mozzarella), fresh veggies (tomatoes), and carbs (sourdough crust). Delicious, filling, and surprisingly balanced.

The Budget Solution: Cooking yourself

If you’re staying somewhere with a kitchen — like My Minga Airport — I highly recommend cooking a few of your own meals, especially if you’re staying longer or want to save a bit. There’s a Penny supermarket right next to the pool, so grocery shopping is super easy.

Here are a few healthy, affordable meal ideas using ingredients from Penny:

Breakfast:

  • Scrambled eggs with whole wheat bread
  • Porridge with fruits and nuts
  • Skyr with fruits and nuts
  • Müsli with milk (Kölln has a version without added sugar — look for “OHNE Zuckerzusatz”)

Lunch or Dinner:

  • Express rice from Reis-Fit (Mediterranean, lentils, or chickpeas), combined with:
    • Tempeh, tofu, a fried egg, or lean chicken for protein
  • Caprese with whole grain bread
  • Whole wheat pasta with pan-fried vegetables, pesto, and cheese (add lean meat or fish if you eat it)

Tasty rice dishes — add some protein for a well-rounded meal.

Pro tip: If you’re arriving via Munich East train station, stop by DM and grab some lentil or chickpea pasta, plus their veggie hack (plant-based mince). They’re super affordable and great for boosting protein in your meals. Want to know which protein bars are worth grabbing? I tested them all in this protein bar guide.

Right next to the surf lagoon, you’ll find SURFTOWN’s own surfskate park — perfect for practicing your turns and flow on land. The layout is beginner-friendly but also fun for more advanced riders. Best part? They’ve got Curfboards available on-site that you can test for free. So even if you don’t own a board, you can still give it a go.

Just a short walk away, the Sportpark offers a bunch of outdoor fitness options:

  • Beach volleyball courts
